Challenges in the processing of the Conical Surface Locating Pull Stud:


1. The high requirements for core dimensions and geometric tolerances (the most direct difficulty)


①The contour and angle accuracy of the double conical surface


  • Even if the angle error of the conical surface is as small as ±10′, when it is assembled, "line contact" instead of "surface contact" will occur, resulting in inaccurate positioning and uneven force distribution.
  • The roundness and cylindricity of the conical surface must be controlled within 0.003 - 0.005mm; otherwise, there will be a gap when it is assembled with the positioning seat, directly lowering the repeatability positioning accuracy.


②Control of coaxiality


  • The coaxiality deviation can cause the threaded pin to be installed on the workpiece, resulting in the conical surface being "crooked" and uneven force distribution when it is in contact with the positioning seat. This not only makes the positioning inaccurate but also accelerates the wear of the conical surface.
  • During the processing, it is necessary to complete the processing of the thread, outer circle, and conical surface in one setup, or use high-precision tooling for a secondary setup. The requirements for the stability of the equipment and process are extremely high.


2.The difficulties of the processing technology (the entire process from turning to grinding)


①The control of deformation during turning and heat treatment for these screws is typically done with 420 stainless steel or 40Cr alloy steel. The main challenges in processing are as follows:


  • Turning stage: Stainless steel materials tend to stick to the tool, and tend to form chip lumps. During conical surface turning, vibration marks and poor surface finish are prone to occur, requiring special tools and stable cutting parameters.
  • Heat treatment deformation: After quenching, the conical surface, threads, and outer circle of the part will have slight deformations. If the deformation exceeds 0.01mm, it is difficult to correct through subsequent grinding. Therefore, deformation allowance must be reserved in advance and the heat treatment process must be controlled.


②The conical surface grinding process (a crucial step in determining the final accuracy) involves fine machining of the conical surface. After this, the surface needs to be refined through grinding to correct errors and enhance smoothness. This is the most time-consuming and demanding part:


  • During the grinding process, the angle, roundness, and smoothness of the conical surface must all be maintained. The control requirements for the grinding equipment, abrasive, rotational speed, and pressure are extremely high.
  • Even the slightest mistake can lead to problems such as "flared openings" or "unclean conical surfaces", resulting in poor fit during assembly and a decrease in positioning accuracy.
